2007 X'mas @ Orchard

ABOUT CHRISTMAS LIGHT-UP 2007 (17 November 2007 – 2 January 2008)

Themed ‘A Fairytale Christmas’, this year’s Christmas Light-up will extend 5.6km down Tanglin, Scotts, Orchard roads, through Bras Basah and Raffles Boulevard, ending off at Raffles Avenue in the Marina Bay area.

The Orchard Road area will shimmer in white and silver with red highlights. Amidst glittering overstreet lighting effects, iridescent crystal snowflakes will drip off Orchard Road’s lush trees alongside other shiny red and silver jewels. The grand celebration arch at the Scotts Road and Orchard Road junction will be magically transformed into Prince Noel’s majestic palace from which he gazes upon and falls in love with his beautiful Princess Ballerina. She lives in a magical carousel (located outside Wheelock Place) and dances to the sweet sounds of a magical harp (located just outside Shaw Centre). The Princess suddenly goes missing and in his search for his true love, the Prince wandered deep into the Crystal Forest.

The junction outside The Heeren takes centrestage in Prince Noel’s search for his missing princess. Reflective ‘icicle’ spirals from the Crystal Forest will hang overhead across the junction framed by ‘ice towers’ at the four corners. Prince Noel pines longingly from his tower (on the side of Meritus Mandarin Hotel) while opposite, an empty tower (at The Heeren) and a reflection of Princess Ballerina (tower on the side of Faber House) remind him of his missing love. The beautiful Crystal Fairy (in the tower in front of Orchard Building), lends Prince Noel her magical chariot led by a flock of swans to aid him in his quest.

Prince Noel’s search progresses down Orchard Road to Marina Bay, where he is greeted by beautiful poinsettia floral balls highlighted with red and gold jewels against the area’s verdant greenery. Here, he is finally reunited with his beloved Princess Ballerina.

Mr Dick Lee, Creative Director of Christmas Light-Up 2007, said, “The Christmases I remember most vividly are the ones of my childhood where I tried to recreate at home a world I gleaned from pictures and storybooks. This year, I’ve drawn inspiration from my favourite fairytales, The Nutcracker Suite and Disney's Babes in Toyland. The magic and wonder of Christmas is seen through the fairytale romance of the wooden soldier and the elegant ballerina. Here, I’ve imagined them in a world faraway from our tropical shores, a Christmas fantasy world of snow, with the crystal snowflake as my strongest visual theme.”

The Christmas Light-Up will take centrestage every night, from 7pm to midnight (Sundays to Thursdays), 7pm to 2am (Fridays and Saturdays), and 7pm to 6am (Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve).
